1. Intro
I have been a journalist for over 20 years. I have seen many people write their stories.
Many of them are not good. Some are even worse than bad. But it is still possible to write good news pieces.
Many other journalists are pretty good at it, and some even quite good, but for the most part, if you want to write a good news story you need to learn how to do it .
A couple of things are also important:
1) You should start with the basics – that is, the fundamentals of journalism (which include breaking news, interviews with people who know what they’re talking about, and so on). 2) You should first learn how to structure your story. That means knowing when and where you can use quotes and when you must use direct quotes. 3) You should learn how to clearly define your point of view (or take-away). 4) You should also learn how to develop an argument or case against your opponent’s point of view (i.e., “the case against…” or “the case for…”). 5) Finally, you should learn how to manage your own emotions – that means learning how to avoid incurring anger from your readers or listeners -and not letting yourself get too carried away by them. 6) And finally, read up on the basic rules about writing in general: 7) Don’t take anything for granted; be prepared for every possible situation; 8) Be careful what you say; 9) Be careful who you say it too; 10) Keep track of who is talking (and why); 11) Use proper grammar and spelling; 12) Do not use slang if it isn’t already in the dictionary (i.e., don’t say “sh*t n****r” or “bitch f***er”); 13) Know your audience – do they listen? 14) Write responsibly: 15-16), 17-18), 19-20), 21-22), 23-24), 25-26), 27-28), 29-30), 31-32), 33-34), 35-36); 37-) 38-) 39-) 40-) 41-) 42-) 43-) 44-) 45-) 46-) 47--- 48--- 49--- 50--- 51--- 52--- 53--- 54--- 55--- 56--- 57--- 58----- 59----- 60----- 61----- 62----- 63-----
2. What are the prerequisites for writing news?
News writing is an art, a skill like any other. It requires a deep understanding of the technology you’re communicating with, and you have to have a good grasp of your own craft.
News writing is not something that can be taught or learned, but it does require an amount of time and focus that most people can’t devote to it for long periods at a time, so it is something that most journalists don’t do very well. And if they do, they aren’t doing it well enough to be able to write news.
Another thing to remember: no one can tell you what you should say in the news unless you are giving them that information.
3. How to write news?
There are a few things we should all do before we write news. First, know the news. Second, know the subject. Third, know when to write the press release.

The news writing skill is one that many people should learn and it is a skill that we hope will be useful for everyone who wants to work in journalism and it’s pretty much everyone! But if you don’t study it or practice it often enough, you may never have an opportunity to put it into practice — unless you consider yourself good at writing (and not just describing) short pieces of text for which no other expertise is required (which I don’t).
News writing is about building relationships with reporters and editors. It doesn’t matter whether you are doing that for your company or for a client; if you want to make contacts and gain influence over what gets written about your company or customer, then you need good news-writing skills. That means knowledge of how press releases work and how journalists work in general as well as being able to communicate complex ideas concisely.
4. Conclusion
Journalism is not a one-size-fits-all subject. If you want to be an effective news writer, you will need to learn everything from the technical skills of writing and reporting, to the social skills of managing relationships, and the business skills of planning for an audience.
Here are some things you should know about writing for publication:
• You need to learn how to write with a voice that is compelling and persuasive. This means being able to write with passion — not just information, but emotion as well. Emotion is important because it will help your readers fall in love with your story. • You have to learn how to craft a compelling narrative — what stories are and what they’re about. • You have to learn how you can use visual imagery in your stories — pictures, video clips, etc.. These kinds of images make stories pop by making them visually more compelling than written words alone. • As part of this process, you need to invest time learning more about the research behind your story and developing theories around topics that matter most (a good place to start is finding out what makes people tick). • When it comes time for reporting, you need focus on producing great visuals that translate well into written words (this takes time). You also want great visuals for short stories that people can read in just a few minutes; long form narratives work best if they can be read over multiple days (more on this in the next section). • When it comes time for editing and copy editing, there’s no magic number; each person has their own way of doing things (and sometimes people find ways to do things better than others). Make sure everyone understands these basics before moving forward so that everyone gets what they need out of the experience when they make their final piece.
